The Do It Yourself Prepaid Plan

The DIY plan “Prepaid wie ich will” (Prepaid how I want it) by congstar, the young brand by T-Mobile, lets you decide how much data, SMS, and minutes you need. Just move the slider for each part of your plan, you will see the price changing instantly.

The maximum data amount you can select is 500 MB, but there is the “Datenturbo” option below. “Datenturbo” will double your data and your download speed (from 7.2 Mbit/s to 14.4 Mbit/s) and will cost you 5€ for 30 days.

It is a prepaid plan, but you need a German bank account for the initial order of the SIM card. If you don’t have a German bank account, order a free SIM card or check out this plan, which you can order with a credit card: Edeka Mobil (Vodafone network).

If you don’t have a German address, just contact us, as the carriers don’t ship internationally.

You will buy phone cards to put money on your SIM card in order to pay the monthly fee.

You will need to pay 9.99€ to start, but Congstar will put a 10€ balance on your SIM card.

Congstar is part of the D1-network (same as T-Mobile), which is one of the best networks in Germany with very reliable reception.

Hi, I have a Congstar prepaid sim, we loaded a 5GB data valid for 1 month, but the data is now consumed before the month ends. I want to load again another data, how shall I do it. Currently we have cancelled the previous prepaid 5GB data load, and it says it will be cancelled in 2weeks. And now we cannot find an option to reload another data tariff.

    • MyGermanPhone

To reload your Congstar prepaid sim with another data tariff, you can follow these steps:

    • Log in to your Congstar account on their website or app. If you don’t have an account, you can create one by providing your mobile number and verifying it.

Once you are logged in, go to the “Prepaid” section and select “Recharge”.

Choose the data tariff that you want to load. Congstar offers various data tariffs with different data allowances and validity periods. Make sure to select the one that suits your needs.

Enter the amount you want to recharge. The cost of the data tariff will be deducted from this amount. If you don’t have enough balance, you can add more by selecting “Add balance”.

Proceed to payment and follow the instructions to complete the transaction.

    • Once the payment is successful, your data tariff will be activated immediately and you can start using it.

Note that if you have cancelled your previous prepaid 5GB data load, it will be cancelled in 2 weeks as stated. However, you can still load another data tariff before the 2 weeks are up, as long as you have enough balance in your account.

If you are still having trouble finding the option to reload another data tariff, you can contact Congstar customer service for assistance. They can help you navigate the website or app and provide additional support if needed.

Is there a way that I can find out exactly when my Current Congstsr prepaid credit expires? I understand that I need to use phone or purchase additional credits within 15 months, but I‘v had my phone for several years and no longer know when the prepaid amount currently on my phone expires.

    • MyGermanPhone

      Hello Keith,
you would have to backtrack when you used that sim card the last time. Apart from that, it is still possible to reactivate a sim card after it expired for the first time. And even if the sim card is deactivated, you can contact the Congstar customer support and they would pay out the remaining credit to you. Your credit never expires, just the sim card you used.

    Hi,

I need a Sim card which can be active and receive calls and SMS without any charges. I have three questions regarding this connection:
    1) If I acquire this SIM and keep it active, do I still need a minimum recharge in a period of 15 months or can I keep using it without any balance and without making any outgoing calls/sms/internet INDEFINITELY?
    2) In this active, but no-balance state, would this phone keep on receiving incoming calls/SMS in any other European Union country than Germany?
    3) When I need, can I port this same number into a favorable postpaid/prepaid connection of any provider in Germany?

Thanks in advance for your response.

    • MyGermanPhone

      Hi Sac21,
1: You will need to top up your credit every 15 months to keep it active.
2: Yes, it will receive phone calls and messages in all of the EU, and probably some other countries which are included in roaming agreements
3: Yes, you can! See here: How To Keep Your Old Phone Number

  8. Sean Fraser

I want to use a Congstar account for when I have friends and family in town from Canada. Therefore I don’t want to set it up with a recurring monthly charge.

If I place 20 EUR on the account but set the minutes, SMS and data all to zero, will there be any recurring charges? Will my balance ever expire (apart from the 9cent/min/SMS)? Will my account be deactivated if I don’t continually use it?

    Thanks,

    • MyGermanPhone

      Hello Sean,
Yes, you could set everything to zero and you will not be charged. However, your sim card will be deactivated and your credit will expire after 15 months without using it. So you should buy credit at least every 15 months to keep it active.

    • Sean Fraser

Thank you for that information. Much appreciated.
      -Sean

    Hello,

Would I be charged to receive text messages from other european countries (specifically France and the U.K.)?

Thanks for your help – much appreciated!

  10. Arturs

Hi, if I use this plan, how much I’m going to pay per min if I am calling to EU countries from Germany or receiving calls from EU countries while being in Germany? Also what is the paying rate per min if I am calling and receiving calls while being abroad? And cost of messages as well, please.

  11. Tom

Is there a minimum monthly charge? E.g., can I buy just two euros of talk and two euros of text, with no data?

    • MyGermanPhone

There is no minimum monthly charge for this Congstar plan. You could also book nothing and pay 0.00 Euro per month. In that case you would even be able to use WhatsApp for free, because they give you the messaging data at no cost.

  12. Katrien

    Hello,
I just installed this DIY prepaid Congstar, but after going through a whole bunch of administrative things (and in German which I hardly speak or understand..pfew!), we got the message that it takes 5 to 7 days to transfer the money from the bank to our account… this is not the fast pre-paid sim card i had in mind… Is there a way that we can use it more fast ?
Now I can receive calls, but not call myself…

In fact I was more looking for a formula “pay as you use the sim-card” because I am a lot not in Germany. Does that exist in Germany? A SIM card that you can reload through a voucher that you can buy in supermarkets?

    Thank you for answering !
    Katrien

    • MyGermanPhone

      Hi Katrien!
Thank you for reaching out to us. Yes, the prepaid charge via your bank account does take a long time. But for congstar, you can also buy the credit in a supermarket, drug store, or gas station. Or you can also buy it online on http://www.prelado.de/en/online-top-up/congstar and you will receive the credit within a few minutes.
I hope this information was helpful!
      Best regards,
      Your MyGermanPhone Team

  13. Sim

    Hello,

If e.g. I select 500 MB high-speed data and I reach these 500 MB within the end of the month will I have a slower GPRS speed or I will have to pay for the extra surfing?

  14. Dean Griffin

Can I pick up a free sim card in Munchen, because I am here now. If so we’re can I get one? If not were is the best place to get one? Thank you Dean

    • MyGermanPhone

      Hi Dean,
you can buy the Congstar sim card in a Telekom Shop, at the “Deutsche Post” or in a drug store, like “dm”. Or you can order it online (see link above) and they ship it to your German address.
