This is big news, as Vodafone is currently the only mobile service provider in Germany to offer roaming for free. Before this policy change, customers had to pay high roaming fees to be able to use data, minutes or text messages in a foreign EU-country. This change is an amazing support for all tourists, who want to do a Europe trip!
Now, when on the Vodafone CallYa Smartphone Special or CallYa Smartphone Allnet Flat plan, you can use everything that is included in your original plan in any EU-country for free. When you are using the CallYa Talk & SMS plan, you can benefit from free roaming for the data options.
All in all, this is a great policy change from Vodafone and we are excited to see which provider is going to follow Vodafone’s lead.
If you want to order one of the Vodafone CallYa sim cards for free, just have a look at the overview.
O2 and Congstar also offer free EU-roaming since June 15, 2017!

I bought callYa prepaid Vodafone card in Germany. May I call someone in Netherland from Germany for free?
MyGermanPhone
No, to Netherlands from Germany it will be 6 Cent/minute to landlines and 24 Cent/minute to mobile numbers. However, if you are in the Netherlands and make a call to Germany, it will be included in the free roaming (if you don’t have free minutes, it will be 9 Cent/minute).

MyGermanPhone
Hello Sova,
This website is about German SIM cards. Unfortunately, these SIM cards are not sold in Austria.

Hello, I bought a Lidl Connect Sim card in GErmany, Will I be able to receive call in Prague on it from somebody calling me from London? I do not have any balance on my card but in Germany I have still incoming calls on it.
MyGermanPhone

Hi, i bought my sim at germany in munich. Im at Zurich right now. The saleman said i can use it in Zurich but i cant even use it. Please i need help
MyGermanPhone
Hello Shafiq,
Switzerland is not included in free EU roaming, because it is not part of the EU. Therefore, you need sufficient credit on your sim card in order to pay the roaming fees.
Xiangwei Huang
Do you have any option for people who wants to use the internet in Switzerland with call-ya card but don’t need to pay such a high bill, it charges me about 60 EUR since I open the data in Switzerland only for 1 hour.

Dear all,
I have Vodafone CallYa prepaid card from Germany. It works in Bulgaria, Romania, Greece.
I’m now in London and I have problem with card. Internet not working.
And some times when someone call me they had voice message that my card are blocked.
When I call someone firs I have some Voice notification on German and after that I can call someone. Voice notification is about 35-45 sec
MyGermanPhone
Hello Velibor,
it could be that you don’t have sufficient credit on your sim card. However, to resolve the issue, you should contact the Vodafone customer support.
Linnea
I bought a prepaid sim card in Germany for 3 months to use in many countries in the EU. I paid 130 Euro which is very expensive. I had calling and SMS in germany but data everywhere else. I haven’t had data in any other countries and I am very frustrated. Data roaming is turned on. Help!!! I am hoping to get to Vodafone shop in Budapest. Will they be able to help me? I am extremely disappointed.
MyGermanPhone
Hello Linnea,
if you paid 130€ for a prepaid sim card you probably fell for a scam. We don’t know any sim card which would cost that much. Try reaching out to the shop that sold it to you and ask them to help you. Unfortunately, we are not able to fix anything in your existing phone plan.
Plinio Figueiredo

I am using Lidl Connect from Germany and often visit Austria. Here the network coverage for my SIM is provided by A1 an it works without any issues for calls, sms and data without any roaming fee.
I get 1.25GB of data allowance per month for the package that I am using. If I activate some add-on data pack from Lidl Connect for let’s say extra 500MB or 1GB data, will I be able to use it? If yes then without any roaming/extra charges?
MyGermanPhone
Yes, you can use all options that you booked in Germany without additional charges.

Another question:
Why did the name of SIM card changed from Vodafone to 3 AT after entering to Austria?
Many thanks in advance!
MyGermanPhone
The provider name can often change when entering another country, it depends on Vodafone’s roaming partnerships. Nevertheless, there is free roaming, and it does not matter which provider you choose in the foreign country.

Hello,
I have the same problem of Conner in Austria. I bought a SIM card from Munich and paid 30 euro but it is not active in Austria and I was wondering if I should turn on the roaming or not. So, should I turn it on? Won’t be I in trouble if I turn on the roaming and does it just consume the pre-paid amount of money?
MyGermanPhone
If you didn’t activate any monthly internet data allowance, then you will probably be charged by the megabyte of data consumed. If you have already activated a monthly plan with internet included, you will not be charged additionally in Austria.

Bought the vodafone prepaid data sim. It worked in Germany but not in Netherlands or Belgium. Perhaps i had to turn on roaming somehow, but i couldnt figure it out and there was no information on the website. Really disappointing as i spent 30 e on it.
If anyone has had this problem, please tell me how to solve it.
MyGermanPhone
Hi Connor,
you need to make sure that “Roaming” is also activated on your device, otherwise your phone blocks the internet connection when in a foreign country. EU-Roaming on your sim card is automatically turned on, no need to change anything with your provider.
Hallie
I bought a callya smartphone special sim while in Germany. When I enter a new EU country I get a text like this: Willkommen in der Slowakei. Hier gilt Dein CallYa Tarif.
Will I have extra charges using my phone in these countries?
MyGermanPhone
Hi Hallie,
this message just says what we have described in our article above: There is no extra roaming fee, the prices are the same as if you were in Germany. You don’t have to pay for incoming calls. Sending an MMS (image as text message via phone network, almost no one is doing this anymore) costs you 39 cents. And after you have used your call and data allowance you will pay 9 cents per minute and 3 cents per MB of data used.
